AGX Engineering designed a custom heavy-duty steel storage and work table for a Melbourne waterjet cutting operator. The client required a purpose-built staging station adjacent to their cutting bed capable of storing and handling full sheets of raw plate material — including mild steel, aluminium, and stainless steel — while withstanding the wet, abrasive environment of an active cutting workshop.
The table was designed with a rated static load capacity of 2,000 kg, three adjustable shelf levels accepting 2400 × 1200 mm full-size sheets, a galvanised grating work surface to allow swarf and water drainage, and heavy-duty swivel casters rated for the intended load — all within the tight footprint available on the workshop floor.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
The facility was using a makeshift arrangement of timber pallets and angle-iron racking to stage material near the cutting bed. This setup posed a manual handling risk during sheet loading and unloading, and the timber pallet bases were deteriorating rapidly due to continuous water and swarf exposure. The client also lacked a defined staging area, leading to material and offcut mix-ups between jobs.
Any replacement table needed to be fabricated from welded steel, resist ongoing water and swarf exposure without surface degradation, and be manoeuvrable by one person so it could be repositioned in the workshop without a forklift.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering designed an all-welded mild steel RHS frame with a base footprint of 2500 × 1300 mm and an overall height of 900 mm, with three shelf levels at 300 mm vertical increments. The frame was sized using 100 × 50 × 4 RHS for the main longitudinal rails and 50 × 50 × 3 SHS for the cross members, checked against the 2,000 kg distributed load requirement with appropriate safety factors.
Work surface and shelf infills were specified as 30 × 3 flat bar galvanised grating panels, which provide swarf drainage while remaining cleanable. Four 150 mm diameter swivel casters with a combined dynamic rating of 2,400 kg were selected, each with individual foot braking. The complete table frame was detailed for hot-dip galvanising after fabrication to achieve a minimum 85 µm average coating thickness for long-term corrosion resistance.
