This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to documenting a custom flanged inspection cover for a process vessel manway. Custom tank covers are required across water treatment, food processing, chemical storage, and general industrial process plant — where standard covers are not available in the required size, material, or configuration.
The example cover is a 600 mm circular bolted cover in 304 stainless steel with a flat faced flange, EPDM rubber gasket, and M16 stainless fasteners. The documentation covers fabrication of the cover plate and flange ring, the gasket cutting template, and the bolt pattern.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Process tank inspection covers must seal reliably against the tank contents — whether water, chemical solutions, or food products — while remaining removable for periodic inspection and cleaning. Custom covers are required when the manway opening is a non-standard size, the process medium requires a specific gasket material, or the tank material requires matching cover and flange material.
This example brief required the cover to seal against a 304 stainless tank shell with an existing flange welded to the tank, using EPDM gasket material compatible with the process chemical. The bolt pattern needed to match the existing flange drilling.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering produced fabrication drawings for the cover plate and lifting handle, a flange ring matching the existing tank flange drilling, and a gasket template drawing with the EPDM gasket cut profile. All stainless components were detailed for 304 grade material with a 2B mill finish on wetted surfaces.
The bolt schedule specified M16 × 316 stainless hex bolts with flat washers and Nyloc nuts, with a torque sequence note for consistent gasket compression. The fabrication drawing set included a material specification summary identifying all component materials, grades, and finishes.
