Example

This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's standard approach to documenting a welded pump base frame for workshop fabrication and site installation. Pump base frames of this type are a regular output for projects in water treatment, process plant, and general industrial environments.

The example covers a motor-pump set base frame in all-welded mild steel RHS construction with an integral pressed steel drip tray, four anchor bolt pockets, and a central coupling guard mounting provision. All dimensions are referenced to the pump and motor shaft centreline to allow accurate equipment alignment.

The Challenge

Problem and Requirements

Pump sets require accurate alignment between motor and pump shaft centrelines that must be maintained through installation and grouting. Base frame documentation needs to clearly identify the shaft centreline datum, anchor bolt positions, grout port locations, and any alignment adjustment provisions such as shim slots.

This example brief required the base frame to accommodate a standard ANSI B73.1 end-suction pump with a 7.5 kW motor, with shim adjustment slots at all four motor mounting points and a drain outlet on the drip tray.

Our Approach

Engineering Solution

AGX Engineering modelled the base frame assembly in SolidWorks, establishing the pump-motor shaft centreline as the primary design datum. The drip tray was formed as an integral component of the base frame with a minimum 25 mm containment depth and a 1-degree fall to the drain connection.

The fabrication drawing package included a general arrangement drawing, frame fabrication drawing with weld schedule, drip tray detail, anchor bolt layout drawing, and a grouting instruction note. Shim slots were dimensioned and toleranced for standard shim pack ranges.

What Was Produced

Deliverables

All documentation was produced to a professional standard so the client's supply chain could work from it directly.

  • 3D CAD assembly model (SolidWorks)
  • General arrangement drawing (plan and elevation)
  • Base frame fabrication drawing with weld schedule
  • Drip tray detail and drain connection drawing
  • Anchor bolt layout and grouting instruction
  • Bill of materials
