This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to documenting custom equipment mounting plates where standard mounting arrangements are inadequate. Custom mounting plates are common where equipment needs to be isolated from vibration, elevated for drainage clearance, or adapted to non-standard structural frame connections.

The example covers a set of three mounting plates — a primary base plate, a secondary levelling plate, and an isolator pocket insert — designed to mount a pump unit to a structural steel frame with rubber anti-vibration isolators. Each plate is a laser-cut mild steel component with machined faces at the isolator pockets.

Problem and Requirements

Rotating equipment generates vibration that can propagate through structural steel frames into surrounding plant and infrastructure. Custom mounting plates that incorporate anti-vibration isolator mounts allow the equipment to be positively located while attenuating the vibration transmission into the support structure.

This example brief required the mounting plates to be designed around a specific anti-vibration mount selection with a defined bolt circle and load rating. The fabrication documentation needed to include tight positional tolerances at the isolator pockets, with clear callouts for post-weld machining.

Our Approach

Engineering Solution

AGX Engineering modelled the three-plate mounting assembly in SolidWorks, with the isolator pocket geometry coordinated from the anti-vibration mount supplier's specification. Tolerances at the machined faces and bolt hole positions were assigned in accordance with the mount supplier's installation requirements.

Fabrication drawings for each plate were produced with clear dimensioning from the equipment datum. DXF flat patterns were exported for laser cutting, and a machining note was included to flag the post-weld face machining requirement at the isolator pockets.
