This sample project illustrates how AGX Engineering approaches a platform and access stair documentation package for industrial maintenance access. Elevated access platforms are a recurring requirement in processing plants, packaging lines, and heavy machinery installations — wherever regular maintenance tasks occur above floor level.
The platform is a cantilevered steel structure attached to the machine frame, with a single-flight stair, full-height handrailing on three sides, and a kick plate around the platform perimeter. The documentation covers fabrication of all steelwork by an off-site contractor and site installation with anchor bolts into the machine base.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Maintenance personnel require regular access to elevated components such as gearboxes, belt tensioners, and inspection points. Improvised ladder-and-step solutions are often impractical for frequent access. A permanent platform structure requires both structural adequacy for the expected live load and clear documentation for off-site fabrication and site installation.
This example brief required the platform to support a 2.5 kPa live load, clear all machine components with 150 mm minimum clearance, and be fabricated in sections small enough to transport and install through the existing plant access doors.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering produced a platform design in 150 × 100 × 6 RHS main beam construction with 65 × 65 × 6 EA secondary beams and open bar grating panels. The stair was detailed as a separate module with a 750 mm clear width, 200 mm rise, and 250 mm going — with handrail connections to the platform rail system.
The fabrication drawing package covered the platform main frame, stair module, handrail system, and anchor bolt layout. A module boundary drawing identified the split between fabricated sections to meet the plant access width restriction. Weld sizes and connection bolting were called out throughout.
