This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to producing lifting lug fabrication drawings as part of a larger equipment frame documentation package. Lifting lug drawings are a specific and important component of any fabricated item that will be lifted by crane or forklift during installation or maintenance.
The example covers four identical plate lifting lugs welded to the upper frame members of a fabricated equipment skid. Each lug is a 20 mm mild steel plate with a 40 mm diameter lifting hole and a 12 mm fillet weld to the frame member, with reinforcing pad plates on both faces of the frame web.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Lifting lugs need to be clearly documented for both the fabricator and the rigging team. The fabrication drawing must identify the lug plate dimensions, hole size and location, weld specification, and the parent member connection detail. The rigging team requires the safe working load rating, lifting angle limitations, and the number of lift points.
This example set of four lugs was required to lift a 4.2 tonne equipment skid at a maximum 60-degree included angle between sling legs. The lug geometry and weld sizes were sized to suit this requirement.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering produced a lifting lug detail drawing identifying the lug plate geometry, hole detail, and pad plate arrangement, with a weld callout schedule specifying the fillet weld size and length at each face of the connection. A rigging reference note was added to the drawing stating the rated lift configuration and maximum sling angle.
The lug material was specified as Grade 350 mild steel, consistent with the parent frame members. A material test report reference was included to indicate that the lug plates were to be identified from traceable plate stock prior to fabrication.
