This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to designing and documenting a welding jig fixture for repeatable bracket assembly fabrication. Production jigs are commonly required when a fabrication shop needs to produce the same assembly in quantity, maintaining consistent geometry without relying on individual welder skill for positioning.
The example jig is designed to hold and locate a three-component bracket assembly during tack welding, with fixed locating pins and a clamping arrangement that allows rapid part loading and unloading between cycles. The jig body is fabricated from RHS steel and surface-ground mild steel tooling plates.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
When a bracket assembly is required in production quantities, manual positioning of components during tack welding introduces dimensional variation between parts. A welding jig that positively locates each component within ±0.5 mm eliminates this variation and allows faster fabrication cycle times.
This example bracket assembly comprised three components — a base plate, a gusset plate, and a tube end fitting — that required accurate angular and positional relationships to ensure the finished bracket fitted correctly to its mating structure without adjustment.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering modelled the jig body and locating elements in SolidWorks, using the bracket assembly model as a reference to establish all locating pin positions and clamp locations. Tooling plate surfaces were modelled to ±0.1 mm tolerance from the bracket datum surfaces, with a note specifying post-fabrication surface grinding to the required flatness.
The fabrication drawing package covered the jig base frame, tooling plate layout, locating pin drawings, and an assembly drawing showing the bracket components loaded in the jig for reference. A usage instruction note was added to the assembly drawing covering component loading sequence and clamp tightening order.
