This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to producing a complete DXF cut file package for all plate components across a steel fabrication project. A structural frame of any complexity typically includes a large number of plate components — base plates, gusset plates, stiffener plates, connection plates, and splice plates — each requiring an accurate DXF file for the cutting operator.
The example covers the full plate component set for a two-bay structural steel equipment frame: 14 unique plate components across three different material thicknesses (6 mm, 10 mm, and 20 mm mild steel). Each DXF file is produced per-part, correctly scaled and layer-structured, with a part schedule providing the nesting operator with a complete summary.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Producing DXF files for a large set of plate components from a complex 3D model requires systematic extraction, unfolding (where applicable), geometry checking, and layer organisation. An incomplete or incorrectly scaled DXF set wastes cutting time and can result in incorrect parts that must be re-cut.
This example set required all DXF files to use a specific layer naming convention for the cutting operator's nesting software, with cut profiles on a CUT layer, hole profiles on a HOLE layer, and text annotations on a TEXT layer.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering extracted each of the 14 plate components from the SolidWorks assembly model as individual flat patterns, applied the correct layer structure to each DXF file, and verified all files by opening in a DXF viewer before delivery. A part schedule was produced identifying each part by number, material, thickness, flat dimensions, and quantity.
PDF check prints were generated alongside each DXF file for operator verification prior to nesting. The complete package was delivered as a single compressed archive with a clearly named file for each part, matching the part schedule.
