This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's approach to producing exploded view assembly documentation for multi-component mechanical assemblies. Exploded view drawings are used across a wide range of applications — assembly instructions, maintenance manuals, spare parts catalogues, and training materials — and require clear, logical component separation that accurately represents the assembly sequence.

The example covers a seven-component mechanical assembly consisting of a housing, bearing carrier, shaft, two bearings, a retaining ring, and a sealing gland. Each component is shown in its assembled position and exploded position, with part numbers referenced to a structured BOM.

Problem and Requirements

Complex mechanical assemblies with multiple closely-fitted components can be difficult to communicate to assembly technicians, maintenance staff, and parts suppliers using conventional 2D drawings. An exploded view drawing separates each component visually, showing the assembly relationship and enabling unambiguous part identification.

This example assembly required the exploded view to be produced at a level of detail allowing a maintenance technician unfamiliar with the equipment to disassemble and reassemble it correctly using the drawing as a reference. Part numbers needed to match the existing spare parts register.

Our Approach

Engineering Solution

AGX Engineering produced the exploded view from the SolidWorks assembly model by positioning each component along its assembly axis with appropriate clearance for visual clarity. Balloon callouts were placed on each component, referenced to a structured BOM table identifying part number, description, quantity, and material or part standard.

Sub-assembly groupings were indicated by balloon number ranges, with the bearing sub-assembly and gland sub-assembly documented separately to support modular maintenance. The drawing was issued in A2 format at a scale that allowed all component details to be clearly visible.
