This sample project illustrates the documentation AGX Engineering produces for custom sheet metal enclosures destined for fabrication at a sheet metal shop. Custom enclosures of this type are common requirements across industrial, agricultural, and process equipment sectors where off-the-shelf enclosures do not accommodate the required cutouts, mounting arrangements, or environmental ratings.
The enclosure design covers a single-door mild steel cabinet with formed flanges, internal mounting rail provisions, cable entry knockouts, and a continuous piano hinge. All sheet components are modelled in SolidWorks and unfolded to accurate flat patterns for laser cutting and press brake forming.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Off-the-shelf enclosures rarely accommodate project-specific cutout patterns, cable entry locations, and internal mounting arrangements without significant modification. This example brief required a non-standard cabinet footprint, a specific door swing orientation, and a removable internal din rail panel — none of which were available in stock enclosures within the project budget.
The brief also required all sheet metal components to be dimensioned for standard press brake tooling, with bend radii and flange lengths coordinated with the fabricator's available tooling.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering modelled the full enclosure assembly in SolidWorks sheet metal, with each panel as a separate part. Bend allowances were calculated for the specified 1.5 mm mild steel and standard 1.5t bend radius, and all flat patterns were checked for interference and correct material consumption before export.
The documentation package included a general arrangement drawing of the assembled enclosure, individual flat pattern drawings for each sheet component with bending instructions, DXF files layer-structured for laser cutting, and an assembly drawing showing the din rail mounting panel and hinge installation sequence.
