This sample project illustrates AGX Engineering's standard approach to a welded mild steel frame assembly documentation package. The frame is a representative multi-bay RHS structure with bolted base plates and welded gusset connections — the type of general-purpose steel frame commonly required by fabricators across mining, agriculture, and industrial equipment sectors.
The documentation package covers the full fabrication scope: general arrangement, individual part drawings, weld schedule with symbol callouts, and a complete bill of materials identifying material grades, member sizes, and surface finish requirements. This example is provided to illustrate the quality and completeness of AGX Engineering's standard drawing output.
The Challenge
Problem and Requirements
Custom steel frame assemblies routinely require a documentation package that fabricators can work from directly without additional clarification. A well-structured GA drawing, clear part callouts, and an unambiguous weld schedule reduce shop-floor queries and rework.
This example brief called for a four-bay mild steel RHS frame suitable for equipment mounting, with adjustable shelf levels, welded end plates for module connections, and a hot-dip galvanised surface finish. All member sizes were selected with reference to common stock section availability.
Our Approach
Engineering Solution
AGX Engineering produced a fully parametric 3D SolidWorks model of the frame assembly, from which GA drawings, individual part drawings, and DXF flat patterns for the gusset plate components were all derived. Section sizes were specified from standard AS/NZS 1163 RHS stock to minimise material waste and sourcing lead times.
The weld schedule was produced using standard weld symbol conventions, with fillet weld sizes called out on each connection detail. The BOM was structured to allow direct purchase order preparation by the fabricator, with quantities, material grades, and nominal dimensions for each item.
